ARTIST Conrad Booker

Conrad Booker is a Designer/Artist who specializes in freelance design services to both the architectural and interior design community. A graduate of Temple University’s School of Architecture, he worked as an architectural designer for several years before starting his own freelance design business.
His body of work includes many corporate office buildings, commercial interiors and residential projects. Working with Mary Jane McCarty Antique Textiles Pillows for over 20 years, Conrad has assisted in the production of antique textile pillows
that are featured in stores like Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus.
Recently, he has expanded his talents to include the creation of butterflies cut from soda and beer cans, as well as, black card stock. His recent city wide show “Metamorphosis” was featured at Bus Stop, Carmelita Couture, Vintage Wine Bar and the historic Head House Square all in Philadelphia. His most recent show “WALLflower”at Colonial Wall Covering showcased butterflies and wallpaper joined together to create 3D wallpaper.
Conrad has been commissioned to paint, by local neighbors at 4th & Fulton Streets, a mural, “Harmony and the Windows of Curiosities.” It will depict a 2 story painted map of the area dating back to the mid 1800’s, large scale painted butterflies, aluminum hand-cut butterflies and a collection of objects assembled in large-scaled
synthetic grass windows. Completion - late summer 2012.

My SILK GRAFFITI tells a story, one both strong and ethereal, both spontaneous and labored. I’m most interested in the stark juxtaposition between my materials: luxurious, sometimes feminine, silk and rough-and-tough nails. I choose to work in a sparkly, luxe material commonly used in dress makings and interior textiles, natural Dupioni silk. I shred the silk, letting it deconstruct, and hand-form the letters directly onto the wall of a foyer, bedroom, dining room, or any well-loved and lived-in quarter or even an event space, much like how a street artist throws a tag up on a crumbling exterior wall.
SILK GRAFFITI is a one-of-a-kind, on-site installation and unique to the individual, as I often use the favorite words of the client as inspiration for the piece itself. The process of creating my SILK GRAFFITI installations is one of push and pull, restraint and courage, delicateness and boldness. It can be created in a variety of scales, colors, and fonts. The beauty is in the details and the perfectly imperfect layers of the tangled silk strings, pieced silk letters, and scattered wire nail heads. Lighting can transform the piece too, bringing out all the nubby iridescence of the silk. Like a fine wine, they only get better with age. Natural elements, like the breeze from an open window running through the silk strands, help further deconstruct the SILK GRAFFITI into a more drippling, tangled web of silk and nails as it matures.
